Weight matters because we have gravity to compete with and the lighter most anything is, there is less friction, less energy required, and with this we can achieve numerous improved efficiencies.
There are over half a billion fleet and commercial cars in the world today, a number anticipated to grow at 3% annually and double within the next 20 years. Motor vehicles are responsible for almost a quarter of global emissions of carbon dioxide, the primary global-warming gas.
With most cars, only about 5% of the energy consumed by the car goes to moving the driver. The rest (95%) is used to move the weight of the car itself. If we reduce the weight of the materials used to build a car, we can substantially reduce this 95% ratio. If this could be accomplished we would substantially reduce the fuel consumption, vehicle emissions while providing new opportunities for alternate power trains and other recognized efficiencies.
The rising cost of fuel and stricter environmental legislation contribute to the pressure to find a solution. In American, new CAFE standards require that every car manufactured in the United States meet fleet wide average minimal fuel efficiency standards of 35 mpg by the year 2020.
Weight is costly to the manufacturer, the consumer and the environment. This is why we stress...Weight Matters!
